With more and more families opting for something that’s got that extra space and power over the typical sedan, the market has really blown up for great, affordable family crossovers. Today we’re comparing one model that we sell here, the 2014 Jeep Cherokee, with a popular competitor, the Ford Escape. Take a look at this side-by-side comparison of the 2014 Jeep Cherokee vs the 2014 Ford Escape to see for yourself: more We’re comparing the two models at their base trim level. For the Cherokee, that’s the Sport model with front-wheel drive, and in the Escape the base model is the S, also with front-wheel drive. Both have higher trim levels available and 4x4 capability is offered on both models as well. Do more in the Cherokee! You’ll notice on the chart that in some areas, the two crossovers are pretty well matched up. The MSRP is nearly identical, and the gas mileage is exactly the same for both city and highway driving. Jeep Cherokee Nine-Speed Transmission A nine-speed transmission. This is something that wouldn’t have even crossed our minds years back. All vehicles had four or five speeds. That’s all we needed, and all we would ever need. Or so we thought. But the Chrysler brand had other ideas. New vehicles like the upcoming Cherokee will be fitted with the transmission. The Jeep Cherokee nine-speed transmission means greater fuel efficiency for consumers – and a smoother overall ride. more Imagine your typical ride. With an automatic transmission, you can definitely feel when the vehicle shifts. But with nine speeds, the Cherokee can gradually get up to top speed while going through nine gears. There is a lot going on in there, but all the while you feel very little while sitting in the vehicle. And just like the Jeep Cherokee nine-speed transmission provides a smooth ride, it also saves gas in the same way. The next gear can continually engage at a lower RPM, meaning that the vehicle is ultimately using less gas as it accelerates. Shifting has come a long way on vehicles. So will we keep seeing vehicles add more gears for these same benefits? We can’t imagine it getting too much more extreme than nine gears being that it all has to work as smoothly inside the transmission as it feels on the outside. But just like the days of four and five-speeds, we could be wrong. We never thought we would see more than five back then, so you never really know for sure.
